A new poll by independent guide book publisher Lonely Planet has revealed that Australia is continuing to remain popular among British and Irish travellers.

Australia scores highly in destination poll

A new poll by independent guide book publisher Lonely Planet has revealed that Australia is continuing to remain popular among British and Irish travellers.

The survey of 17,500 people found that the top three destinations tourists said they wanted to visit next were the US, Australia and New Zealand.

This could be due to the pound's reasonable exchange rate in these countries, as opposed to in Europe where its strength has slumped.

Lonely Planet travel editor Tom Hall said: "The question of where people are travelling to next is always an interesting one. The US is obviously becoming increasingly popular due to the exchange rate, making what was once an expensive country to travel in a lot more accessible."

Anyone booking holidays to Australia may be interested in the country's Tourism Association guide, which provides a list of things that can only be done in the country.

This includes standing where the rainforest meets the reef near Cairns and visiting the site where the world's largest gold nugget was found in Victoria.
