Gap years a great opportunityGap years are a great opportunity to see the world and make a difference before settling down into a career, it has been claimed.

According to Ben Clifton, spokesperson for the volunteering charity Latitude, gap years don't have to cost the earth and can be really worthwhile in terms of transferable experiences.

"It's a perfect opportunity, once you have finished at school and you've done all your exams, to actually take a bit of time out and experience something really different before starting on your university or your employment career," he commented.

Latitude recommends planning any gap year trip carefully and budgeting for all aspects, looking out for bursaries if possible.

The organisation also states that trips should be planned in order to keep the traveller safe, especially if he or she is alone.

Many people going on gap years book flights to Australia, which is widely seen as one of the best destinations for such a trip.

The country is famed for its laid back lifestyle, beaches and outstanding scenery and paid work is available if necessary.
