Unsure what to do next? Try AustraliaWith many university applicants expected to defer their place this year, these young people could consider taking gap year holidays to Australia.

This is according to Tourism Australia, which commented on the fact that 29,000 people will put their places on hold this year.

A spokesperson from the organisation told MarketWatch that a working gap year in Australia could be a rewarding and enjoyable choice.

Rodney Harrex, Tourism Australia general manager, said that the group has recently set up a website with details on how to get a 12-month working visa and tips on how to live the Down Under lifestyle.

He commented: "I know a lot of parents worry that their children will run out of money on their gap years, but the reality is on a Working Holiday Visa you can begin employment from the first day you arrive on Australian soil."

Earlier this month, volunteering charity Lattitude said taking a gap year can add important skills to a person's CV, making them more attractive to employers.
