Medical expenses could be crippling for distant countries

A spokesperson for the Association of British Insurers has urged people travelling to far-flung destinations to ensure they have any possible medical expenses covered by insurance.

In news which could be important to people planning holidays to India or Australia, Malcolm Tarling said that although policies are important for all holidaymakers, medical treatment will become more expensive the further away from Britain people go.

"Different countries do present different risks. The further afield you travel the more important medical expenses cover is, for example, [it becomes more costly] especially if travelling to Africa and Asia," he commented.

According to Defaqto, one in seven British tourists go abroad without any type of cover, even though a recent report from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office showed that holidaymakers are continuing to need assistance abroad.

If a person needs to be returned to the UK from Australia in case of injury or illness, it would cost up to £20,000 for the flight, stretcher and doctor's escort, FirstAssist Services reports.Meet the editors...
