Melbourne a world city of the futureA study carried out by a research firm has ranked the city of Melbourne as one of the world's top destinations for the future.

US-based Ethisphere Institute said Melbourne, along with New York, Cape Town and London, could benefit from investment and an increase in tourism as it grows to become a world city, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

Melbourne was praised for its efforts to improve the environment through the provision of bike paths and public transport.

"In Melbourne we've focused on enhancing our city's characteristics to build its identity as a place for people. In Melbourne, you'll always find something you like to see or do," Mayor John So said.

The city plans to increase its late-night entertainment in order to attract more tourists, as well as operating public transport 24 hours a day.
