Emirates reduces fares after oil prices drop

Passengers on Emirates flights to Australia, South Africa, the Far East and the Indian Ocean may benefit from reduced ticket prices after the airline announced reductions.

The Dubai-based carrier said fares could reduce by as much as 20 per cent after the price of oil dropped by $140 (£70) a barrel, the Travel Trade Gazette (TTG) reports.

Speaking at the TTG Travel Awards, Emirates head of sales Glen Mintrim said that the carrier had continued to see high passenger numbers despite the price rises earlier this year, but that it would now pass on savings to its customers.

"We suffered like any other airline when oil goes up to $145 a barrel. It put pressure on the business and we increased fares to deal with it," he explained.

The reduced fares are expected to go on sale on October 24th and will be reviewed again in June 2009.

Emirates Airlines is the seventh largest carrier in the world in terms of international passengers, having carried 21.2 million during the 2007-08 financial year.
