Etihad to launch flights to MelbourneEmirates-based airline Etihad Airways has announced that it is to launch flights to Melbourne from Abu Dhabi as of March 2009.

This will make it the third destination in Australia to be served by the carrier, along with Sydney and Brisbane.

Etihad Airways chief executive James Hogan said: "We hope that our new Melbourne flights will also prove to be a winner for both commercial and leisure traveller alike."

Melbourne Airport chief executive Chris Woodruff added that the new flights reveal the wealth of attractions that the Australian state of Victoria has to offer to business, trade and tourism.

Last month, Etihad told the American media that it intends to carry 25 million passengers a year by 2020, as well as doubling the number of cities it serves to 100.

Etihad - Arabic for united - was established in 2003 and offers services to 48 destinations, including 17 a week from London Heathrow.Meet the editors...
