According to the firm, sales of the Australian dollar have risen to their highest ever level over the past month, with a massive increase of 89 per cent on 2007's figures.

Helen Warburton, head of travel at the Post Office, said that sales of Australian dollars usually peak in November and December, but the increase seems to have happened earlier this year.

"It may well be that holidaymakers are switching to a destination where they will get more for their money," she suggested.

Last month, readers of Conde Nast Traveler magazine voted Sydney top in a list of the world's favourite cities for the seventh year in a row, perhaps due to its wide range of cultural attractions such as the Sydney Opera House.

It also came top on the Australian and Pacific category, with Melbourne in second place.
