Don't give up on gap years, expert says

People going on gap years, including those taking holidays to Australia, have been advised that while they may take a deal of planning, it will be worthwhile in the long run.

People going on gap years, including those taking holidays to Australia, have been advised that while they may take a deal of planning, it will be worthwhile in the long run.

Penelope McEniry, author of the travel book Gap Year, told the Age that many people worry too much about safety on such holidays, despite the fact that they are no more dangerous than other trips if planned properly.

She also said that people who have been on gap years could have significant advantages over those who have not when it comes to applying for university places and jobs.

"One of the main goals of a gap year is, I believe, to promote independence, resilience and self-reliance," she commented.

The expert recommends that anyone going on such a holiday should seek out the details of activity programmes before booking and log in with companies such as the Foreign Office before setting off.

According to the Telegraph, Australia is currently the top destination for gap year holidays.
