Melbourne Airport sees record number of passengersMore people are choosing holidays to Melbourne, if figures from the Victoria tourism authority are anything to go by.

Some 2.2 million people passed through the city's airport during October, a rise of 6.8 per cent on the numbers seen in September.

This broke the previous record, which was 2.17 million in March.

State tourism and major events minister Tim Holding said Melbourne is the major events capital of the world.

"Growing visitor numbers are a testament to the strength of the Victorian tourism industry," he commented.

In other news for people going on holidays to Melbourne, its Southern Star Observation Wheel is now open, giving visitors the chance to see panoramic views of the city and up to 25 miles beyond.

It will open 365 days a year and features spectacular light shows at night, with some 1.5 million people expected to go for a ride in its first 12 months.
