Dont get stung by big mobile bills, travellers warnedAnyone wanting to keep in touch with their loved ones while on holidays to Australia and other destinations this winter should make sure they know how much they will be charged for mobile phone calls.

This is the advice of James Parker from price comparison site moneysupermarket.com, who pointed out that charges for calling and texting can vary between different providers and that bills can soon rise to significant levels.

"Always check with your operator how much calls, texts and data will cost and if there's a cheaper international tariff available while you're away," the expert recommended.

He also suggested getting a global SIM card if you travel frequently or intend to go to a number of different countries.

Ofcom recently cited the example of a holidaymaker who received a bill for £1,400 for using a portable modem to access the internet abroad as a warning to keep an eye on what is included in mobile bundles, rates and tariffs.
