Anyone looking to go on holidays to Australia had better look sharp if they want to catch the migration of the red crabs.

According to What's on When, the tiny creatures only breed at certain times of the year on Christmas Island, but the event is worth watching, especially for nature lovers.

This year, the crabs have already migrated on October 24th and November 23rd, so the last chance to witness them is thought to be December 22nd.

Eggs that were laid and fertilised previously hatch and develop into larvae. However, when fully grown, they all return inland en masse, creating a carpet of red crabs.

"The little crustaceans let nothing get in their way. Keep an eye out and tread carefully," the website advises.

Flying Fish Cove, Ethel Beach and Greta Beach are all good locations to see the migration.

Christmas Island is a territory of Australia in the Indian Ocean that has a population of around 1,600.
