Always take out travel insurance, skiers toldAnyone about to go on a ski trip - including those taking holidays to Australia - should make sure they have taken out an appropriate travel insurance policy.

This is the advice of Sainsbury's, which reveals that claims due to injuries sustained on winter sports breaks have increased by 11 per cent since 2007 as they become more accessible to more people.

However, with medical expenses through injuries costing up to £2,991, appropriate cover is a must-have, Sainsbury's spokesperson Sam Marrs said.

"You need travel insurance to pay for any private medical treatment or, for example, to be airlifted from the slopes or repatriated back home," he commented.

The most common injury for people on ski holidays was found to be damaged knee ligaments.

Mr Marrs' advice could be timely, since a recent report in the Times attested that 75 per cent of skiers purposely look for the most exciting black runs when on such trips.
