Although reports of the economic downturn may be frightening many people into tightening their belts, they should not necessarily give up on taking a foreign holiday, for example, to Australia.

This is according to independent travel expert Simon Calder, who suggested that families need not resort to camping in their back garden in order to get a reasonably priced break.

"People shouldn't automatically turn their backs on going abroad. The main message is that there will be some great value holidays this year but shop around to make sure you get it," he commented.

According to a recent survey published by Aldi Travel, 82 per cent of British people agree that a good holiday is crucial for their wellbeing.

Meanwhile, 60 per cent of people said that value for money is an essential issue when it comes to choosing where to go.

Long haul destinations may be good value for those looking to escape the eurozone this year.
