People planning holidays to Australia can enjoy a pub crawl with a difference in Melbourne by discovering some of the city's secret bars.

According to journalist Annabelle Thorpe, Melbourne is renowned for its hidden venues, which travellers may have a fun time trying to track down.

Writing in the Observer, she said that one such bar which warrants a visit is the New Gold Mountain on the outskirts of Chinatown.

Situated on a cobbled alleyway, the bar - which was a former tailor's studio - boasts a "giddy-hot-pink" interior and has two separate areas.

"The downstairs room, all lush scarlet decor and dim lighting, has a distinctly opium-den feel, while the upstairs room is kitsch-pink, with antique furniture and a neat line in sours," Ms Thorpe writes.

In a recent article for the Irish Independent, travel writer Willy Brennan said Melbourne offers a "huge" range of top-class restaurants as well as numerous designer stores.

He said the city is a great place for "people watching" and has an "intimate air that makes you feel right at home".Meet the editors...
