More people are taking gap year breaks, perhaps including holidays to Australia, new figures suggest.

This year, 50 per cent more travel insurance policies have been sold than in 2008, according to Direct Travel Insurance.

The company speculates that this could be due to people taking the opportunity to spend their payouts after being made redundant and that they may be waiting until the jobs market is more healthy before seeking new work.

While the most common ages to take such a trip were 19 and 21, there was also a large number of 36-year-olds buying such policies.

The average length of a gap year was found to be six months and cover was taken out for activities including parasailing, rafting, bungee jumping and shark diving.

Those going on holiday may also wish to check their baggage cover after it was revealed earlier this week by InsureandGo that 1,086 Britons lost luggage at airports every day last year.Meet the editors...
