Get cover for unusual activities, expert warns travellers

People going on holidays to Australia and other popular gap year destinations should make sure they are covered for any unusual activities they intend to do.

This is the advice of Steve Nickerson, spokesperson for Preferential Direct, who said that as many as 45 per cent of gap year travellers may not be buying travel insurance before they go, while many more could simply be buying basic policies which would not pay out in case of injury during extreme sports.

"Wherever you are planning to explore in the world on your gap year, travel insurance is vital," he stressed.

Unusual activities may include archery, martial arts and trekking, the expert said.

Sainsbury's Finance also recently urged people not to forget the importance of travel insurance after it found that 465,000 people have cancelled such policies over the past year due to the credit crunch.

This could be pertinent advice at present, since the Australian Tourism Export Council recently revealed that more people than ever are choosing backpacking holidays in Australia.
