The Australian region of West Gippsland has retained its historical culture, has gourmet food and wine and a tree that people on holiday in Australia would love to hug, a travel writer has said.

The Australian region of West Gippsland has retained its historical culture, has gourmet food and wine and a tree that people on holiday in Australia would love to hug, a travel writer has said.

"The densely forested headwaters of the Tarago have sparkling creeks as tributaries [and are] all worth exploring," says Paul Edwards, writing for Australian newspaper the Age.

He recommends heading on the Ada Tree walk where an 84-metre tall tree is too irresistible to avoid a hug, despite its 15.7-metre diameter.

The region can be reached from Melbourne in an hour and a half by car and has "magnificent scenery" adds Mr Edwards.

He also suggests heading to the Toorongo Falls which are especially "spectacular" after a period of rain.
Yarragon "punches way above its weight" for those looking to shop for home wares, gifts or food, he continues, and he highly recommends trying the bread.
