Australian destination designated National LandscapeKangaroo Island has been given National Landscape status by Tourism Australia and Parks Australia, which may interest those planning holidays to Australia.

Tania O'Neil, regional tourism manager for Tourism Kangaroo Island, commented that the award for the island in South Australia was "a major win" for the destination "and in particular the tourism industry here".

She added that it was evidence that "Australia is now broadening its view and incorporating other significant landscapes" beyond iconic sites like the Great Barrier Reef and Uluru.

Designed to encourage international visitors and recognise areas of Australia that promote conservation and benefit regions socially and economically, the first National Landscapes were designated in 2008.

The island is the only location added to the list this year and Ms O'Neil stated that members of the National Landscapes were "impressed" by the tourism sector on Kangaroo Island when they visited last year.

Seven times the size of Singapore and one-third national or conservation parkland, Kangaroo Island is a good location to see local wildlife such as koalas, seals, echidnas, platypus, wallabies, goannas, penguins, cockatoos and kangaroos on unspoiled beaches and bushland.ADNFCR-1809-ID-19226166-ADNFCR
