Families can make cutbacks on spending in resortSelf-catering on an Australian holiday can be one way in which families can manage their budget more effectively," explained Kate Kenward, executive director of the Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO).

"If you are self-catering, make use of your facilities by shopping and cooking for yourself rather than opting for a restaurant each night," she explained.

Taking food or a packed lunch on a family day trip can also be a good way of saving on eating out.

If heading to the beach for the day, Ms Kenward recommended heading to one of the less popular stretches of sand, where sun loungers may be cheaper.

According to figures from the Post Office, families can spend as much as £56 on top of their holiday budget on beach buys for the children while overseas.

It also suggested that a family ticket to a water park could cost less than spending half an hour on a jet ski at the beach. Meet the editors...
