A new experience is on offer for those who visit Queensland on holiday this year, where visitors can strike it rich and dig for dinosaurs along the Tropic of Capricorn.

Dig the Tropic is a "geo-journey" where travellers on holiday in Australia can drive between 15 "geological wonders", including sapphire gem fields and the Capricorn caves.

"What remains today to be discovered with 'Dig the Tropic' is a living museum, a country embedded with great mineral wealth, tell-tale fossils and inspiring landscapes," explained Tourism Queensland.

The route takes six days to drive, beginning at the Great Barrier Reef on the central Queensland coastline and ends in the Outback in the town of Boulia.

However, the tourist board recommends extending your holiday in Australia to two weeks to really explore the region's treasures properly.

According to DigtheTropic.com, the best way for visitors to get to Central Queensland is to take a flight from Brisbane, Sydney or Melbourne to Rockhampton or Longreach.
