Debit cards 'not good for trips to Australia'

People going on holidays to Australia have been advised against using debit cards during their trip.

Debit cards not good for trips to Australia

Travellers who are going on holidays to Australia should not use debit cards while they are in the country, a currency expert has said.

Caxton FX pointed out that if a debit card is stolen while a person is overseas, it can be cancelled but a replacement cannot be sent out.

"If you're somewhere far flung like Australia, this can be a serious inconvenience," the firm said in a statement.

Other potential problems with debit cards include the extra fees for such activities as withdrawing cash or, in some cases, every time a purchase is made.

Caxton FX also noted that debit cards can be difficult to use for budgeting purposes and are subject to poor exchange rates.

It suggested that people use prepaid cards instead.

People on holiday in Australia can explore the country on the ground or in the air.
