Consumers still seeking holidays to AustraliaHolidays to Australia and other exotic locations are still a top priority for younger people, despite the ongoing effects of the global economic downturn, it has been asserted.

Tourism NZ chief executive George Hickton made his comments following the country's first-ever Backpacker Industry Conference.

He explained that younger travellers have continued to show their resilience and passion for heading overseas in the face of tough financial conditions.

"We found that despite the economic downturn, youth travellers are not put off by ticket prices and they are very driven to get to the destinations they want to see," Mr Hickton continued.

He concluded by noting that backpackers often benefit regions by staying in them for a longer period of time and spending money in the process, which is something that could provide financial help to local economies.

People thinking of taking holidays to Australia may be even more tempted as Sydney recently appeared in a ranking of the top ten places to visit by the readers of Wanderlust magazine.
