Qantas' passenger count 'on the increase'

Increasing numbers of people are snapping up cheap flights to Australia from Qantas, new figures suggest.

Australian airline Qantas has revealed a rise in the number of passengers travelling on its planes.

The latest figures from the group and its subsidiary Jetstar show that the two carriers combined experienced a six per cent increase in customers flying on domestic and international routes in August when compared to the same month in 2008.

Alone, the firm's subsidiary Jetstar also performed well as it saw a 107 per cent rise in the number of passengers it carried internationally during the same timeframe.

Qantas has placed more emphasis on expanding its low-cost operations of late, offering its customers cheaper options amid the economic downturn.

This news comes after the firm revealed in August that it had taken delivery of a brand new Airbus A380, bringing the number of aircraft it operates within the same fleet to a total of four.

It is also due to accept two more of the aircraft by the end of 2009, which may enable it to offer more cheap flights to Sydney and similar locations.
