Qantas announces new recycling service

Anyone booking flights to Australia may be interested to know that Qantas is enhancing its environmental credentials.

People travelling on flights to Australia with Qantas will now be able to recycle onboard, it has been announced.

The Australian flag carrier has launched an in-flight recycling scheme, with the intention of reducing the amount of its waste that goes to landfill by 25 per cent by 2011.

According to the airline, this initiative demonstrates its commitment to environmentally sound practices by building on existing recycling projects.

Alan Joyce, chief executive officer at Qantas, commented: "We are committed to implementing processes and policies that will help protect the environment for generations to come, from recycling to providing best practice carbon offsetting facilities."

He explained that the latest project will see the carrier recycle approximately 8.5 million bottles, cups, tumblers and cans annually on its domestic flights alone.

Qantas, which was established in the Australian outback in 1920, offers all its passengers the opportunity to offset their carbon emissions from its flights by making a small donation that is used to fund environmental initiatives.
