Holidays to Australia 'are a trip of a lifetime'

People taking holidays to Australia often view it as the 'trip of a lifetime', one travel industry expert has claimed.

Holidays to Australia are a trip of a lifetimeA travel specialist has commented that, although the country is a long way to travel for British tourists, it is worth the effort as many view it as "a trip of a lifetime".

However, Lisa Warner, spokesperson for Trailfinders, added that one trip is often not enough.

"What we often find is that once people have been there they often revisit the country in future years," she said.

Her comments come as the Australian minister for tourism announced significant funding for the industry following a downturn in travellers visiting the country as a result of the global financial crisis.

A report by the UN World Tourism Organisation revealed that the Australian inbound market contracted by 1.1 per cent between January and April this year, compared with the same four months in 2008.

However, the study noted that problems within the Australian travel market are largely the result of under-performance in its domestic sector.
