People booking holidays to Australia may want to consider visiting Ningaloo Reef on the western coast rather than the Great Barrier Reef.

Anyone who has booked flights to Perth this year may be pleased to learn that the city is not a million miles from one of the country's best-kept underwater secrets.

Ningaloo Reef, situated off of the coast of Western Australia, offers travellers a chance to experience a diverse marine environment, just metres from the beach.

Elen Thomas, UK PR manager for Tourism Western Australia, explained that the Ningaloo is home to a fringing reef, which means it starts in shallow water near the edge of the coastline.

"Visitors can wade out and immediately snorkel over colourful reef and swim alongside turtles, rays and tropical fish," she said.

In this respect, it differs from its more famous counterpart on the east coast of the country, the Great Barrier Reef.

The Ningaloo coast has been nominated for a World Heritage Listing to help protect the biodiversity and geological attributes of the 260 km-long reef.
