Following the Savannah Way across Australia is one of the top adventure holidays on offer, one travel journalist has revealed.

Anyone booking flights to Australia who is in search of an alternative to the usual holiday hotspots may be interested in one journalist's suggestions for those visiting the country.

Writing for the Times, Ian Belcher selected the drive along the Savannah Way as one of the ten best adventures of a lifetime.

The journey will take travellers across Australia, starting in the coastal city of Cairns, crossing the outback and onto the white sand beaches of Broome on the west coast, he explained.

"Savannah Way is a road trip par excellence," Mr Belcher stated. The route is 3,700 km long and follows roads and dirt tracks across the country.

Anyone who makes the trip will cross three time zones and can look forward to stopping off at four World Heritage sites and visiting 14 national parks.

Highlights of the trip include Lake Argyle near Kununurra and the Undara Lava Tubes near Mt Surprise, according to the Savannah Way website.
