Travellers in Sydney may have been surprised if they ventured down to Bondi Beach last weekend.

A library with a difference at Bondi Beach

Anyone who is currently taking holidays to Australia may have been lucky enough to catch an unusual installation on Bondi Beach.

To celebrate its 30th anniversary, furniture store Ikea constructed 30 large, red bookshelves on Sydney's iconic beach, the Daily Mail reported.

Filled with books, anyone enjoying the sun was welcome to remove novels from the shelves and indulge in some literary fiction.

Sunbathers could chose to either swap one of their own books for a new one from the selection or just make a donation to raise money for the Australian Literacy and Numeracy Foundation.

Next weekend, one of the city's other stretches of sand will be home to a spectacle of a different kind.

On February 7th, thousands of swimmers are expected to take to the seas at Manly Beach for the Cole Classic ocean swim.

Competitors will dive in to the two kilometre-long course that runs around the bay, with thousands of spectators expected to watch the race from the surrounding cliffs and beaches.
