Anyone who has booked flights to Sydney could take advantage of the services on an iconic railway line which links the city to Adelaide and Perth.

The India Pacific railway is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year and one tour operator is offering discounts to tourists who want to enjoy the train journey to mark the event.

Richard Twynam, programme director at Austravel, commented: "Australia is a wonderfully diverse country and we think it is important for customers to realise that they can see an awful lot of it in a short space of time."

During a trip on the Indian Pacific line, holidaymakers will travel through a diverse range of landscapes, including the Blue Mountains and the Nullarbor Desert.

The railway also boasts the longest stretch of straight train tracks in the world, travelling for 478 km without needing to make a turn.

Lucky travellers might even catch a glimpse of some of the native wildlife such as kangaroos and the Australian wedge-tailed eagle.
