Queen's Baton travels across Australia

The Queen's Baton began the Australian leg of its journey ahead of this year's Commonwealth Games yesterday.

Anyone who is on holidays to Sydney may have caught a fleeting glimpse of the Queen's Baton as it makes its way across Australia.

The symbolic baton is undertaking a journey to all 71 countries that will be taking part in the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi later this year.

It began the Australian leg of its journey in Sydney, with a ceremony to strengthen ties between the two nations.

The baton then continued its journey to Melbourne, where it was passed on to two of Australia's best-known athletes - Cathy Freeman and Steve Moneghetti.

Brisbane is the next stop scheduled on the relay, followed by other destinations along the Gold Coast.

Taking 240 days to complete its world tour, the relay will end when the baton reaches the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Delhi on October 3rd for the opening ceremony of the competition.

People on holidays to Australia over the coming week may have an opportunity to see the Queen's Baton before it leaves the country and travels to the Pacific nations of Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands.
