Drive through Queensland to discover real-life AustraliaAnyone who has booked flights to Sydney with the intention of travelling up the coast towards Cairns and Port Douglas should consider taking their time and driving, one travel writer has stated.

Ken Skehan recommended starting with a trip up the Pacific Highway, which heads towards Lamington National Park.

In an article for the Daily Mail, he explained that there are plenty of attractions to visit in this part of Australia, including the O'Reilly's Rainforest Retreat that features boardwalks through the sub-tropical rainforest.

Another good spot for weary travellers to stop off at is Airlie Beach, Mr Skehan noted, where holidaymakers can "lounge in the brilliant sunshine" and leave feeling refreshed.

He also suggested heading away from the coast and venturing inland to the Tablelands, where tourists can enjoy many different hiking trails.

Tourism Australia notes that there are lots of unusual activities to try on a visit to central Queensland, including seeking out gems in the Sapphire Gemfields and viewing Aboriginal rock art in Carnarvon National Park.
