Australia sees visitor numbers rise

More people have been touching down on flights to Australia in the first three months of this year, compared with 2009.

New figures have shown that more people visited Australia during the first quarter of 2010 than in the same period the year before.

The International Visitor Survey revealed that the nation saw six per cent more arrivals during this time.

It would appear that holidaymakers have been able to find cheap flights to Australia and have been enjoying breaks there.

But despite the rise in the number of visitors, the average amount spent by travellers fell by 3.9 per cent, the research found.

Executive director of the Tourism and Transport Forum Brett Gale was cautious about the increase in travellers arriving in Australia.

"While it's good news that we are seeing a recovery in arrivals, we must remember that we are coming off a low base following falls from 2008 and 2009," he stated.

In 2009, 5.6 million international travellers arrived in Australia, according to figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
