This is according to monthly research released by SkyScanner, which found that the Australian destination climbed by five places to reach number 34 in its list of top 50 holiday locations by search volume.

Sydney was the only Australian city to make it into the 50 most popular locations, while the highest-placed Asian destination was Bangkok at 17.

Meanwhile, in the rankings for the most popular country for British holidaymakers overall, Australia was placed 13.

The south-east Asian nations of Thailand and India were ranked 15 and 16 respectively.

Earlier this week, Nicky Catley wrote for the Daily Telegraph that Sydney is home to "spectacular beaches, brilliant boutiques, world-class food and a year-round temperate climate".

Among the attractions that tourists should check out is Cockatoo Island in Sydney Harbour, the journalist stated.
