Book cheap flights and head off, travellers urgedThose considering taking a long trip abroad should just seek out cheap flights and go.

Writing on a Lonely Planet forum, traveller abianco said that the "best experiences come from not being too organised".

They urged people to just "book flights, turn up for them and see where your travels take you", advice which could be useful for those looking for cheap flights to Australia or another popular backpacking destination.

Abianco took their first round the world trip in 2002 and said they "loved every second".

Cheap flights to Australia are great for those taking a gap year or longer trip on a budget and could allow them to save cash for attractions including the Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House.

To make a flight to Australia even more affordable, holidaymakers could consider a stopover on the way - which is also ideal for breaking up the long journey down under.
