Cultural sites could highlight Australian history

The decision to add a number of key Australian convict sites to the World Heritage List has been welcomed by the travel industry.

Austravel believes the addition of the sites by UNESCO could help to further boost the country's appeal to tourists and those taking flights to Australia.

A total of 11 locations have been added to the list and means that there are now three official UNESCO heritage sites across Australia and a further 18 protected areas in Tasmania, Sydney, Fremantle and Norfolk Island.

"Australia has a unique heritage and plenty to offer visitors who want a cultural experience from their holiday as well as enjoying the beaches and landscapes," said Ben Briggs, Austravel's brand manager.

He added that it was reassuring to know that the cultural sites will be protected as they form a crucial part of the country's varied social history.

Other World Heritage attractions in Australia include the Great Barrier Reef, Sydney Opera House and the Kakadu National Park.
