Australian destination praised by Lonely Planet Newcastle in Australia has been named as one of the best destinations in 2011 by a new Lonely Planet guide.

The book described the New South Wales city as "underrated" and explained it has been "overshadowed by its bigger, bolder and better-known sibling, Sydney", according to news.com.au.

Coming ninth in the top ten, Newcastle was rated higher than a number of high-profile world cities such as London and Paris.

Lonely Planet's Asia-Pacific travel editor, Shawn Low, explained larger capital cities can often be "too dull" and that the guide book was looking to encourage travellers to pick lesser-known cities to explore".

According to the new guide, the major attractions of Newcastle include its beaches, nightlife, weather and arts.

Newcastle is in the Hunter region of the state. The city has its own airport that offers direct flights to Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne.
