Perth Airport is to undergo a major overhaul to meet the growing demand from passengers taking flights to Australia.

Perth Airport is to undergo a major overhaul to meet the growing demand from passengers taking flights to Australia.

Beginning at the start of 2011, the three-year project is expected to cost $500 million (£310 million) and will ensure the airport will be capable of handling the superjumbo Airbus A380.

The new terminal has been designed with BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto and will provide parking for 20 aircraft.

Perth Airport has seen an increase in passengers in recent years due to Western Australia's ongoing development and the revamp will mean the introduction of a new 'fly in, fly out' terminal to handle travellers taking flights to north-west Australia.

According to the airport's operators demand rose by 7.5 per cent with a record of 10.4 million passengers recorded in 2009.

Holidaymakers taking flights to Perth will also benefit from a new shared domestic/international pier that will allow easier and more efficient transfers.

A number of airlines operate from Perth Airport including AirAsia, Qantas, South African Airways and VirginBlue.
