Oprah boosts travel to Australia There has been a surge in US travellers taking flights to Australia following the successful trip made by Oprah Winfrey, according to the Australian minister for tourism.

Martin Ferguson believes that the recent chat show's visit has helped to raise the profile of the country and attract more US tourists as well as increased investment from overeas businesses.

"In the last twelve months we have seen major investments by foreign companies in Australian resources and energy projects," said Mr Ferguson.

"These projects create jobs, support regional communities and drive economic growth."

The minister is currently visiting the US to help promote the attractions of Australia and ensure that recent reports of flooding do not have a negative impact on impressions of Down Under.

He added that Australia has always been desirable destination for US holidaymakers but he hopes the latest campaign alongside Oprah's shows will ensure they "go ahead and book".

The special farewell shows featuring Oprah have already been aired in the US and Australia and are expected to be eventually shown in 140 countries.
