Australia's hotels join forces

Some of Australia's leading hotel groups have joined forces to develop a new industy association to help promote the sector.

Some of Australia's leading hotel groups have joined forces to develop a new industy association to help promote the sector.

So far, Accor, Mantra and InterContinental are among the key chains which have agreed to become members of the Accommodation Association of Australia (AAA).

The chief executive officer of the AAA, Lorraine Duffy, explained that the new initiative was a major and welcome step within the sector. It is also hoped that the high-profile members will be able to influence government policy on key issues such as tourist taxes and attracting more overseas visitors.

She added: "It hasn't happened overnight, we have had these discussions for many years."

In a move that could improve standards for those taking flights to Australia, the association will focus purely on the provision of accommodation.

So far, the AAA's membership covers around 2,000 properties and nearly 60,000 guest rooms.
