Islamic Museum of Australia to open in MelbourneCulture vultures who are set to jet off on cheap flights to Melbourne in the coming months may wish to pay a visit to the newly established Islamic Museum of Australia (IMA).

The attraction, which is located in the suburb of Northcote, complements a number of other Melbourne institutions that celebrate the city's cultural diversity, including the Hellenic Museum and the Chinese Museum.

Speaking at the gala dinner to mark the launch of the IMA, minister for multicultural affairs and citizenship Nicholas Kotsiras backed the venue to enhance Victoria's reputation as a "thriving, cohesive and cosmopolitan state".

He added: "It will dispel myths and misconceptions, and work towards creating an understanding, compassionate and cohesive society. It is a noble vision; it is a worthy vision."

When it opens, the museum will aim to attract high-quality exhibitions by collaborating with other institutions from Australia and around the world in a bid to encourage artistic exchange and cooperation.
