Qantas expands destination listInternational airline Qantas, which offers cheap flights to Sydney, Hong Kong and Jakarta, has expanded its flight range to include the Chilean capital of Santiago.

The airline will begin running chartered flights to the South American city in early 2012 once the Chilean government has given the airline approval.

Qantas will operate the service three times a week and will replace its current flights to Buenos Aires.

Qantas chief executive officer Alan Joyce said that offering services to Santiago would be ideal for business travellers and will make Chile a travel hub in the region - with connections to Argentina, Brazil, Peru, Ecuador and Colombia available.

"There is considerable potential for Qantas to help develop the fast-growing trade, tourism and cultural ties between the Asia Pacific and South American markets," he added.

Qantas was recently forced to cancel a number of its flights to Sydney and flights to Melbourne following a volcanic eruption in Chile, which also affected services to and from Canberra airport.
