Auckland Airport sees strong increase in profitsThe number of people taking flights to Auckland could be higher than before as the terminal has reported a rise in its profits.

According to new figures, the airport, which is the largest in New Zealand, has seen a strong lift in its annual profits due to a rise in passenger numbers and a rise in retail sales.

For the year to June 30th 2011, it saw a 15.1 per cent increase on the previous year, with underlying profits of NZ$120.87 million (£61 million).

In addition, it announced that it is expecting to see this increase for the rest of the year.

"Asia and in particular China is now driving much of the growth in global travel demand. This means we need to focus on the key markets," said chief executive Simon Moutter.

People travelling on flights to Auckland at the present time could expect to see snow, as the country has seen heavy flurries recently, with Wellington seeing snow for the first time in 40 years.
