Melbourne store named best in the world

A store in Melbourne has been crowned as the best in the world at an awards ceremony in Berlin.

Travellers on cheap flights to Melbourne might want to make a stop off at the Myers store in the city when they arrive as it has been named the best shop in the world.

The building underwent a huge redesign earlier this year and it is these modifications which saw it scoop the prize at the Oracle World Retail Awards, the first time that an Australian store has picked up the prize.

"Four years ago our vision was to bring to Australia and Melbourne a world class department store. We felt we had delivered that for our customers," said Myer chief executive Bernie Brookes.

It had beaten off competition from properties including the Disney Store in New York and the Desigual shop in Barcelona to take home the honour.

Several important events and awards may attract people to take cheap flights to Melbourne in the future, as the Brownlow Medal is set to be staged in the city for at least the next five years.
