White roofs could be seen in Melbourne

Buildings across Melbourne could soon be getting a white coat of paint following research by the city's university.

People on flights to Melbourne could notice many of the roofs in the city have been painted white as they fly across the city if the plans put forward by the university are taken up.

Researchers at the University of Melbourne have found that by painting the roofs of a building a light shade can help to reflect heat in the warmer months of the year and keep the whole building feeling cooler.

The roofs, which are also known as cool roofs, have been gaining in popularity recently, with lord major Robert Doyle saying he would like to see more people follow the council's lead to paint their roofs.

''White roofs are a low-cost solution to making buildings more sustainable, particularly our older buildings,'' added Melbourne University senior lecturer and lead researcher Dr Dominique Hes.

There could be a lot of people planning to head on flights to Melbourne in the coming days, as the city's leg of the Big Day Out festival is set to arrive on January 29th.
