New sculpture unveiled in Melbourne Travellers on flights to Melbourne could be planning to pay a trip to the city's Federation Square after a new artwork was unveiled there.

Dutch designer Theo Jansen has unveiled a new sculpture which has the ability to move forward using the power of the wind.

The design, which resembles an animal with many legs and a tail, has been created as part of the sculptor's Strandbeests series, which has seen other designs walking the streets of cities in countries including the UK, Japan and Taiwan.

Made of plastic tubes and bottle, the Animaris Umerus design uses internal wind pumps to move its 12-metre long and four-metre high mass forwards, with daily demonstrations to be held of the moving artwork.

Some people who take flights to Melbourne could find they are impressed with the city before they even leave the airport, as it was recently named the best in Australia by passengers.
