Dubai could be worlds next fashion capitalOne of the world's leading fashion designers has hailed Dubai as the potential fashion capital of the world thanks to a planned development for the city.

Karl Lagerfield is to be part of a project called Isla Moda - Fashion Island - which will open in the resort in 2011 and is to include haute couture boutiques, villas and a 250-room luxury hotel with themed rooms.

It will also stage fashion shows and act as a meeting place for the fashion industry's top names.

"Dubai is a fashion bud on the verge of blossoming into the next fashion hub of the world … Isla Moda has tremendous potential to be the style icon of the future and I intend on driving the island to high style stardom," Mr Lagerfield said.

The designer is widely recognised as one of the most influential fashion designers of the 20th century and has collaborated with a variety of names, including Chanel, Chloe and Fendi.

Earlier this month, research firm Deloitte stated that the number of tourists visiting the Middle East could go up by as much as ten per cent this year, driven mainly by demand for flights to Dubai.
