People heading on holidays abroad should not be overly worried about becoming victims of crime as long as they behave appropriately, a travel writer has said.

People heading on holidays abroad should not be overly worried about becoming victims of crime as long as they behave appropriately, a travel writer has said.

Adam Vaitilingam, author of some of the popular Rough Guide travel books, spoke out in response to media coverage regarding the safety of some resorts after two British people were murdered in Antigua.

Although not referring to the case specifically, he remarked that the reason some people become more vulnerable when on holiday is because they behave in ways they wouldn't do in Britain.

"They might go walking on a dark beach at night without taking any precautions, they might be more flashy with their jewellery and money or they might leave items lying around - it's really just a case of taking the same precautions that you would at home," he said.

The Foreign Office recently issued advice on how to stay safe in isolated areas, which included keeping travel documents in hotel safe deposit boxes.

Anyone heading on holidays to Dubai is also advised to consider the country's dress and behaviour code after a British woman was arrested last month for lewd behaviour on a public beach.
