People going on holidays to Dubai to visit the new Atlantis resort may be interested to hear about the hotel's new environmental credentials.

Marine biologists and vets from Atlantis, the Palm, were recently called in to rescue a four-metre whale shark which had become stranded nearby, Business Intelligence Middle East reports.

The shark was in distress amid the high temperatures and salty water, so the resort's staff transported it back to Atlantis for recuperation at the huge aquarium on-site.

It has been monitored 24 hours a day and the biologists have been able to collect vital data on the species while nursing the animal back to health.

Alan Leibman, president of Atlantis, the Palm, said he was pleased to have been able to offer the expertise of his aquarium staff.

"Aquariums and marine habitats have been the key to education about our oceans and the animals that live in them. Education, conservation and research go hand in hand to benefit all marine life," he commented.

Recently, travel journalist Stephen Bleach wrote in the Times about his own visit to Atlantis, describing the resort as a mind-boggling feat of engineering.
