In what may be of interest to people going on holidays to Dubai, the city has been voted as the Middle East's leading destination at a prestigious ceremony.

The World Travel Awards (WTA) event was held this week at the new Atlantis resort, which earned a Guinness World Record for its aquarium last month.

Dubai picked up the award for best destination, while Dubai International Airport scooped the prize for leading airport.

Graham Cooke, founder and president of WTA, said the region is attracting growing recognition, with visitor numbers predicted to double by 2020.

"Not only Dubai but the whole of the Middle East region is a constant signal to everyone of how bold vision and innovation, investment and positive responses can make a difference – despite global economic fears," he remarked.

In related news, the Associated Press reports that Dubai has put in a bid to host the 2013 world swimming championships, along with Hong Kong and Madrid.Meet the editors...
